What came beforeAI-assisted

Fourpeaked Mountain is a stratovolcano in Katmai National Park that had shown no recorded eruptive activity in historical times before 2006. The volcano remained largely unstudied and obscured by Fourpeaked Glacier, which covers most of its surface.

Catalyst / how it startedAI-assisted

On September 17, 2006, Fourpeaked Mountain erupted for the first time in recorded history, producing an ash column that rose thousands of feet into the atmosphere. The eruption was detected by satellite imagery and ash fell across the surrounding region of southwestern Alaska.

Who was involvedAI-assisted

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) monitored and documented the eruption through satellite data and remote sensing. The Alaska Volcano Observatory coordinated the scientific response and analysis of the volcanic activity.

TimelineAI-assisted

September 17, 2006: Fourpeaked Mountain erupted, marking the first recorded eruption of the volcano. The eruption produced significant ash emissions detected by satellite instruments across Alaska.

What happened

History Before the eruption began on September 17, 2006, Fourpeaked Mountain had been dormant for over 10,000 years. [ 1 ] September 17, 2006 Pilots and other civilians reported two distinct and very large steam plumes coming from Fourpeaked Mountain. They were seen as far away as Homer , Alaska located northeast of Fourpeaked across Cook Inlet . Scientists on subsequent flights by USGS/AVO discovered that volcanic gases were being vented "vigorously" near the summit. Air sampling confirmed these findings.

Fourpeaked Mountain, also known as Fourpeaked Volcano, is an active stratovolcano located in the U.S. state of Alaska within Katmai National Park and Preserve. The volcano is nearly completely covered by Fourpeaked Glacier.
